About Scott
Scott Remer is a highly experienced spelling bee coach with 13 years of experience tutoring students for success at the highest levels of the Scripps National Spelling Bee and producing spelling bee prep materials. He takes on elite spellers for regular one-on-one and group coaching. He also offers one-time diagnostic tests and ad hoc tutoring arrangements, and he has a series of audio modules and word lists available for purchase for serious spellers. He graduated Yale University summa cum laude in Ethics, Politics, & Economics and received his master’s degree from Cambridge University in political thought & intellectual history. He has authored 3 textbooks: Words of Wisdom (5th ed.), Sesquipedalia!, and Regional Bee Ready!.
After placing 34th at the 2007 National Spelling Bee and 4th at the 2008 National Spelling Bee, Scott wrote Words of Wisdom: Keys to Success in the Scripps National Spelling Bee. Words of Wisdom was the very first spelling bee resource to be written by a recent competitor, and Scott constantly improves it. Published in February 2010, it is now in its fifth edition and is updated as the Bee evolves. It now contains 446 pages, which is more than enough material to keep a speller busy for quite some time!
Words of Wisdom has a wealth of preparatory material, including over 55,000 bee words, tables and observations of over 50 languages, in-depth coverage of trouble spots like -ible/-able and -ant/-ent, over 100 focused exercises, practice spelling tests and bees, an outline of what questions to ask onstage and other advice about bees, advice to coaches and parents, the thoughts of prior champions, a detailed discussion of what it’s like at the National Spelling Bee, and an extensive vocabulary section.
On January 27, 2022, Scott published Sesquipedalia!: A Rigorous Vocabulary Study Guide for the Scripps National Spelling Bee and the PSAT, SAT, ACT, & Other Standardized Tests. Sesquipedalia! can profitably be used as a study tool for middle- and high-schoolers seeking to expand their vocabularies for writing, literature, and English classes and daily living. It would also make an excellent guide to the PSAT, SAT, and ACT verbal sections. For more on Sesquipedalia!, please click here.
Regional Bee Ready! is Scott’s most recent (although probably not last) textbook. It contains over 8,000 excellent off-list regional-level words organized by difficulty and language of origin. It also contains about 20 extensive skill-building exercises with thousands more practice words. It’s also rigorous and challenging enough to be suitable for advanced spellers who are looking to consolidate their knowledge and guarantee that they won't be tripped up by a word from left field at their regional bee.
