Spelling Tutoring

I provide 3 services: (1) weekly group lessons [for advanced spellers and beginners], (2) weekly 1-on-1 coaching for spellers with a demonstrated record of achievement & exceptional promise, and (3) one-time consultation sessions to devise study plans & discuss how to best prepare for the Bee. A combination of group and 1-on-1 sessions is also available for promising spellers with budgetary constraints. To request more information, please email me.

My pedagogical method: We ensure that spellers have an extremely solid foundation in Latin and Greek roots, and we cover languages of origin systematically, spending most of the time on Greek, Latin, French, Italian, German, & Spanish using my books Words of Wisdom: Keys to Success in the Scripps National Spelling Bee, 5th ed., Sesquipedalia!: A Rigorous Vocabulary Guide, Regional Bee Ready!, and A Few Final Words of Wisdom as textbooks. We also work on vocabulary, particularly on how to logically induce definitions using Greek & Latin roots.

For 1-on-1 lessons, the curriculum is customized based on the speller's areas of strength and weakness and what the speller wants to focus on. For group lessons, the curriculum is standardized and covers a set list of languages and topics which I want to make sure spellers know how to address.

I assign homework (usually exercises to review specific skills or supplemental searches for spellers to conduct to find new words) and will almost always supplement WoW quizzing with quizzing from non-WoW word lists that I have created personally.

After every lesson, I send an email with a list of missed words and stems and points to review. My expectation is that spellers and their families will maintain a document containing a missed words list and that they will learn these missed words.

Depending on my availability, more ad hoc tutoring arrangements (e.g., twice-monthly, once-monthly one-on-one lessons) may also be a possibility.

HOW THE SPELLING TUTORING WORKS

1. CONTACT SCOTT FOR MORE INFORMATION

Contact me for more information and to book an appointment for a 90-minute diagnostic assessment. You will need to complete a questionnaire and pre-pay before the diagnostic session.

2. 90-Minute diagnostic assessment

The diagnostic test assesses what languages the speller is best at and what languages s/he needs work on. We will discuss best study practices, my philosophy of spelling, and what resources to use to prepare, and I will answer any questions you may have.

3. Decision about how to proceed

After the diagnostic session, I will make a determination about placement. In some cases, I may advise a course of independent study until the speller is ready for tutoring.

Types of classes: I offer 1-on-1 classes and group classes. Group classes are capped at 6 students. I use Zoom for tutoring. Each lesson is an hour long. Classes are once weekly unless we make an alternate arrangement. I try to group spellers of similar skill level in the group classes to ensure that they are well-matched and able to learn from one another. I use the same teaching methods in the group classes as in the 1-on-1 classes. The quality of instruction is the same.

Group classes are more suitable for younger students and students of intermediate level; they offer students the opportunity to learn from one another's mistakes. 1-on-1 lessons are more suitable for students who are more advanced and have fewer years of remaining eligibility. I may also potentially offer smaller group classes for students of high ability as an intermediate option between 1-on-1 classes and larger group classes. Whether I do so or not will depend on interest.

Rohan Rajeev, 2017 NSB runner-up

I just wanted to tell you thanks for tutoring me in my journey to the Scripps National Spelling Bee. It helped me immensely in both the spelling and vocab aspects of the bee. In addition, I was mentally prepared for what the bee had in store, such as the stage, lights, cameras, etc. It was a pleasure meeting you and studying under your guidance.
