Words of Wisdom

Scott’s most recently published book, the last in the series!

Drawing on Scott’s vast experience, these four comprehensive guides to the Scripps National Spelling Bee prepare you for success at every level of the spelling bee world. The series consists of four volumes: (1) Words of Wisdom, Keys to Success in the Scripps National Spelling Bee, 5th ed. (the “speller’s bible,” a beloved textbook which primarily focuses on spelling and has a secondary vocabulary section); (2) Sesquipedalia!: A Rigorous Vocabulary Study Guide for the Scripps National Spelling Bee and the PSAT, SAT, ACT, & Other Standardized Tests, the official companion book to Words of Wisdom which focuses chiefly on vocabulary; (3) Regional Bee Ready: Preparation for School, City, & Regional Spelling Bee Off-List Words and Spelling Fundamentals for All Spellers, a textbook which focuses on regional-level competition and honing spellers' fundamental skills, and (4) A Few Final Words of Wisdom: Dialect & Geographical Entries, Homophones, & Other Themed Words.

If your goal is to memorize wordlists and possibly win your school bee, by all means, pass on this book (Words of Wisdom). However, if you are determined to reach a higher level of competition, especially if your goal is to make it to the Nationals, this book is a must-have. Mr. Remer has written a gem. Loaded with roots/stems, spelling rules for numerous languages, spelling/vocabulary practice tests, as well as thousands of word examples from every language represented, this book will make you soar to a level of spelling you might have not believed possible.
— Yolanda Ni, 2019 NSB finalist

Written by a former Spelling Bee contestant who placed 34th and 4th in his two years of participating, Words of Wisdom not only recounts the author's experience, but it also prepares you to have the thrill of your own lifetime. Scott maximizes your study time by organizing the book into sections, each with a specific set of skills or goals in mind. He has dissected almost every language that has entered our English patois and has formatted the words into tables, with accompanying observations.

It covers the entire spectrum of languages and provided a great foundation for me to venture into the depths of the dictionary – there were literally thousands of words that I knew from reading it, which I wouldn’t have known otherwise.

MIRA DEDHIA, 3RD PLACE FINISHER IN THE 2017 NSB

The reason I wanted to write to you was to thank you. Your book Words of Wisdom was so essential and invaluable in my learning....I would say about 60-80% of the words asked in the finals were from your book, including words I received like beisa, Aubusson, spiegeleisen, and euphroe. I wouldn’t have been able to spell many of these words without the help of your book. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with the rest of the spelling bee community. It helped me accomplish my goals, and I have no doubt that it will continue to do the same for future spellers. Thank you, Mira
